As you know, I love trolling for baby stuff so I see my fair share of sites that sell baby products.
Most of them fall into "a couple cool things but mostly stuff I can find at Babies R Us", "Beautiful stuff whittled by unicorns in France and therefore cost as much as my car" and finally the "I've clearly never actually seen a baby but these are the wares that I think would suit them starting with thigh-high leather boots", but every so often I come across a site that makes me so happy that I rub my feet together like a damn cricket.
The Spotted Monkey has a wide array of items I've never seen before, reasonably priced products and it strikes a nice balance between fun and practical.
Here are some of the things that I found on this site that I think rock it like a hurricane:
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Sozo Monkey Nap Sack: According to my very sophisticated polling on Facebook, it looks like sleep sacks are a godsend. Finding one that doesn't look like your child was being swallowed by an acid tripping dish towel proved a little more difficult so I was pretty happy to find these. There's a lady bug and a savannah version as well. $39.99
Substance Nappy Rash Ointment: Somebody richer than me gave me this when I had my second son and I thought, "It's nice that it doesn't have any crap in it but I don't know if I'd go to the expense of buying this on a regular basis". Well, I did because it's awesome and it smells like figgin' Captain Fantastico. I used it on my hands as well. $16.99
Knock Knock Don't Kill The Kids Pad: This is brilliant AND funny. Plus, it sort of hides any anal retentive qualities you may have because, you know, it's on the list so you HAD to fill it out. On the flip side, it's great for those of you that are just so happy to get out that you tend to forget things like, I don't know, a number where you can be reached in case your kid snorts a Cheerio. $8.99
Tiny Tales Baby Tales: I had grand plans to scrapbook everything in my kid's first year but that quickly turned into a box that will no doubt hold everything until he's about 20. I like this because it captures those little, awesome snippets that kids have and you inevitably forget them even though you swear it will be seared in your mind forever. $34.99
Note: these guys also carry the Mommy Measure which falls into the fantastic-without-feeling-like-a-failure camp as well. You can find the review I did on that a few months ago here. $16.99
Baby Loopies Pretty Bitty Brights: These are so damn smart. It is almost impossible to keep shoes on a newborn – they're like Barbie that way – so these are a fantastic alternative. Let's face it, the little weebles don't go anywhere that requires shoes anyway so rock these socks like a tuxedo t-shirt. They have them for boys too. $26.99 for 6 pairs
The Spotted Monkey's Rhet: You know how much I love this kind of handmade-vintage-without-the-old-dirty-basement-stink, right? I love this little guy and I can totally see him becoming the go to buddy for any kid. There are no batteries, no glitter, no squeeze noise and no buttons to choke on. Just pure "come at you like a spider monkey" awesome. $27.99
Needless to say, I could go on about this site forever. I even contacted Stephanie (the daughter of the mother-daughter team that owns the store) to tell her how wonderful I thought the site was and found out that she's a mom of a three-year old, a one-and-a-half-year old and is due with her third baby in February, which is clearly why she knows her stuff. I also found out she's a Pregnant Chicken reader which also makes her brilliant (and tolerant of the term asshat).
Stephanie was even nice enough to buy an ad and give me a Rhet the Monkey to give away to one of you lucky readers. All you have to do is check out The Spotted Monkey site and either become a Twitter follower or Facebook fan then come back here to leave a comment and you're entered. I'll choose a random winner on Friday December 3rd at 8pm (I was going to say midnight but who the hell am I kidding, I can't stay up that late.).
